How to best prepare your body for winter
Hello again! I know I haven’t been writing here a lot recently, this is only because I had a crazy busy summer! I hope you all had a good, relaxing time this summer as well!
It’ that time of the year again, when it is starting to get colder in the evening, the sun sets earlier, the leaves are starting to fall, and… well, let’s be honest, everybody is starting to get sick.
Most of us are working in closed environments where there’s no fresh air is flowing (if you got lucky working from home or have the chance to have lots of breaks outside, high five for that!).
When the office is closed, and people are sick, it is very easy to catch those viruses. Here I’ll give you some tips on how to prepare your body for winter and strengthen your immune system.
There are many ways to do this: supplements, nutrition, herbs, homeopathy, life style. Below I’ll give you the highlights:
- Vitamin D. First and foremost, vitamin D. Here in Canada, and all the other northern hemisphere countries, there is no chance to absorb vitamin D from sunlight exposure during the cold months. I really like this article it explains everything you need to know: https://hormonesbalance.com/articles/how-to-replenish-your-vitamin-d-levels/
- Vitamin C. When you start feeling the onset of a cold, take vitamin C. Lots of it. Up to 5,000 mg per day for adults, and 3,000 mg per day for kids. Space it out through-out the day.
- Drink lots and lots of water. 2-3 liters a day. Water helps our bodies flush out all the toxins.
- My favorite way is to consume more fruits and veggies. Fruits and veggies have variety of vitamins, minerals and anti-oxidants to help our body fight viruses.
- Green leafy vegetables. They’re packed with antioxidants, rich in vitamin A – good for building your body’s natural defenses, vitamin C for healthy skin and bones and vitamin K to help your body heal itself quickly when necessary. In addition to these vitamins, beautiful green veg is also rich in potassium and iron.
- Berries. Hard to find them during winter months, so you can buy them frozen in big batches at Costco. Make sure to buy organic, as berries are part of the “dirty dozen” and usually full of pesticides.
- Make sure you get enough sleep. It’s during the night when your body does all the hard work and gets rid of toxins.
- Exercise. On a regular basis (not when you are sick of course!).
- Essential oils. Another favorite of mine! Put them in a diffuser or rub on your chest and back. So many benefits! Stay tuned for a surprise to come in few days!
